| Name: | Li Shengshun |
|---|
Character Name: Li Shengshun, sometimes goes by Hei
Series: Darker than Black
Gender: Male
Age: unspecified; appears anywhere between 19 and 21.
Species: human
Sexuality: heterosexual
Appearance: Hei stands at about average height and is very lean, despite his ridiculous appetite. He is of Chinese descent and has short, dark hair and dark blue eyes. While he may not exactly be well built, he does have some defined muscles and is in very good physical shape. His dress code consists most commonly of very generic clothing: jeans, a plain shirt, and maybe a light jacket. It doesn't vary much, unless he's on a mission from the Syndicate.
Personality: Hei has a bit of a double persona. His “public” persona is Li Shengshun, who appears to be a good-natured Chinese exchange student with an interest in astrology. Polite almost to a fault, soft-spoken, and quick to apologize, Li is the type to keep his mouth shut and listen to someone else talk before adding his opinion. Which is fairly easy, since he’s quite often filling it with food.
It’s left to speculation how much of this persona is faked; though some parts of it may be genuine, it contrasts deeply with the stoic, cold-hearted demeanor he carries as Hei the Contractor. He’s very down-to-Earth, calm, and collected. To Hei, nothing is a joking matter.
While both personalities are two sides of the same coin, Hei acts as Li when around people from outside the Syndicate unless given a reason to act otherwise, although occasionally parts of Hei’s personality might slip through.
Abilities: Hei’s contract gives him the ability to generate and discharge electricity through conductive media (i.e., water or metal), at high enough amounts to kill grown men or short out an entire building’s electrical system. Unlike most Contractors, Hei has no remuneration (payment for using his powers). In Manhattan, he isn’t as able to constantly use the ability (as in, he’ll get tired out after a short while). He is also well trained in martial arts (though he never specifies what specific kind of martial arts), and is particularly at the defensive aspects of them; in a fight, he often spends more time dodging blows than dealing them.
Weaknesses: Hei has all the emotions and feelings of a human that Contractors are believed not to have, and is quick to act on these emotions. If he gets angry enough he may snap and act based on his rage, whether or not the action is appropriate at the time. He is also surprisingly compassionate, which also can get him into trouble in certain situations, particularly when it comes down to kill-or-be-killed. Another, huge weakness of his is his sister; talking about her to him is, in general, a bad idea.
Manhattanite or outsider? Outsider
History: Five years after the appearance of Hell’s Gate and Heaven’s Gate in Tokyo and South America (respectively) and before becoming a Contractor, Hei was involved as an assassin in a war around Heaven’s Gate that involved many Contractors. The end result of the war was the Heaven’s Gate and a 1500-mile radius around it vanishing from the face of the Earth, taking with it everyone inside that radius, including Hei’s sister, Bai. Hei blamed her disappearance on Amber, who apparently had betrayed the organization.
Five years later, Hei came to Japan posing as a student from China while working as Contractor for a group known as “the Syndicate”. Working alongside a blind doll named Yin, a Contractor named Mao, and a human by the name of Huang, Hei set about completing a variety of missions and raising a lot of hoopla in the Tokyo police force. Upon Amber’s return, Hei began pursuing her in hopes of gaining information about Bai’s whereabouts; in doing so, he uncovered a plot by the Syndicate to wipe all the Contractors from the face of the Earth by destroying Hell’s Gate. He infiltrated Hell’s Gate and met up with Amber, who used an item called the Meteor Fragment on him to create a very strange phenomenon that allowed Hei to talk to “Bai”. She and Amber were able to (vaguely) explain the reasons behind the South American Gate incident, and, upon being released from the phenomenon, Hei stopped the Syndicate’s efforts to destroy the gate. He was able to forgive Amber and decided to live for himself, rather than the Syndicate or Bai.
